Where Did Witches Come From?
First of all, it is necessary to go back in time a little to understand the origin of this literary character.
The Celts appeared in Central Europe in the middle of the second millennium BC and, from there, spread their religion – one of the oldest in the world.
Two great deities were revered (Mother Goddess and Horned God) and these gods were believed to ensure the prosperity of offspring, agriculture, livestock and the success of war.
The druids, practitioners of the Celtic religion, taught the art of agriculture, healing with herbs, hunting, among other things. They held ritualistic parties in honor of the deities, in addition to initiating people in the precepts of the magical art.
They were also versed in many arts of divination, believed in communicating with nature spirits and predicting the future.
With this, arises the idea of witchcraft, which were intermediate practices between the plan of gods and men.
What is the Origin of Halloween?
Halloween was a festival in the Celtic calendar, the festival of Samhain. It was celebrated between October 30th and November 2nd and marked the end of summer.
These parties were held to honor the ancestors, as the belief was that the souls of the dead returned to their homes to visit family members, seek food and warm themselves by the fire in the fireplace.
On that day it was customary to make fires in the hills, leave cakes in the open air and light candles letting them burn until sunrise, which represented luck.
Why is Dressing as a Bruxa not Halloween?
This is a festival traditionally celebrated by witches, so the custom on this date is to dress up as a witch.
Its celebration is related to the passing of the seasons: it symbolizes the end of summer and the arrival of winter.
