About Box Braids / Rastafarian

Before making Box Braids it is necessary to understand everything about the subject to make the right bet and without fear. Below we answer the main questions on the subject to clear all your doubts.

How much does it cost? #price

The price of box braids depends a lot on the material used, whether it's all over the hair or just a few strands, and especially on the value of the professional's labor. You must imagine that the more famous and skilled the trancista, the greater the value. We can say that the values vary from R$90 to R$500, and may vary for less or more depending on the region of Brazil.

What are the Main Care?

Box braids are beautiful, but they require a lot of care to maintain their beauty and keep your hair healthy. The main precautions are:

  • Wear a cap to sleep: You know when you wake up with frizzy, electric hair? This happens because of the friction between the wires and the pillow, so with box braids it's important to wear a cap made with tights or satin to protect and make it look nice for longer.
  • Washing: A lot of people believe that those who use box braids cannot wash their hair frequently, but this is pure lack of knowledge. It is possible to wash with the routine you already follow, ideally at least 3 times a week. The difference is not in the number of washes per week, but in the way of washing. It is recommended to use shampoo only, as the conditioner stimulates hair oiliness and can leave residue. This causes the braids to lose their hold more quickly.
  • Dry: Letting your hair with box braids dry naturally can be a full plate for the appearance of fungi, so the recommendation is to always dry using a hairdryer after washing. But be careful: the dryer must be at a distance of 20 cm to avoid the risk of ruining the braids.
  • Hydration: Who said box braids hair shouldn't be hydrated? Hydration should be done once a month, but it is not recommended to use moisturizing masks or creams. The tip is to use oils only at the root, without rubbing the hair.
  • Use of a towel: If you are going to remove excess water from your hair with a towel, you only need to squeeze and never rub the braids.
  • No beach: The downside of using box braids is having to avoid the pool and beach. Chlorine and salt end up stealing hair hydration and the synthetic thread can absorb and damage the threads, apart from the damage that sun exposure does. If you don't resist, the tip is to cover your hair and avoid getting wet.

long-does-it-last-">How long does it last?

The duration of the box braids is also part of the care, as you cannot use it for more than 3 months. It is indicated to withdraw after three months and give a break of at least 3 months to do it again. This is part of hair recovery, so the strands remain strong and healthy.

Damage Hair?

Regardless of whether you have box braids or not, what ruins your hair is not taking good care of it. Hair requires maintenance, washing, hydration and a series of care that we already talked about in this post. Doing everything right, your hair will be even prettier when the 3-month period passes and you need to remove the box braids.

What are the Types of Box Braids?

How to Make Box Braids: Step by Step

It is much more comfortable and guaranteed to do the box braids with a professional braider, in addition to the technique, it is a time-consuming process that takes at least 3 hours. Doing it at home can double this time, so the first tip in our step-by-step guide is to have an extra dose of patience. The second tip is to ask someone to do the back of your hair, if that doesn't work, put a mirror in front of you and a back mirror so you can see what you're doing. Let's go step by step:

Materials:

  • hair elastic
  • Lighter
  • Thread, jumbo or kanekalon synthetic yarn

Step by step:

  1. The first step is to wash your hair, detangle it and dry it. Never do box braids on dirty hair. It's also important to wash only with shampoo so as not to leave the hair greasy and slippery.
  2. Divide the hair into eight sections. Divide first from the forehead towards the back of the neck and then divide into 3 parts on each side.
  3. Start by making the box braids at the nape of the neck, with 2 or 3 cm strands, it all depends on whether you want thinner or thicker braids. Our recommendation is to make thin braids so that it is not too heavy on the head and gives it a more delicate touch.
  4. Cut the synthetic hair to twice the length you want the hair to be.
  5. Fold the yarn in half and wrap it around the first strand.
  6. Start braiding.
  7. At the end of the braid, tie with an elastic band. It's important to give it several turns to make sure it's stuck well.
  8. Do this process on all hair, always from the nape of the neck towards the forehead.
  9. Cut the remaining thread below the elastic.
  10. Run the lighter along the end very quickly to finish it off and keep the braid from coming loose.
  11. Is ready! Now you can wear your hair with loose box braids, in a bun, tied up, ponytail, samurai bun, among many other options.
