Wool Dread: Doubts, Care and Models + DIY!

It's normal to have some doubts about wool dreads, since they're not so popular here in Brazil, but I'm here today to clear up these basic questions that everyone asks!

What is wool dread and how is it different from other types of dreads?

Wool or thread dreadlocks are temporary (last up to 3 months), made with a wool base and covered with thread or wool in the color you prefer. They are a good option for those who want to lengthen their hair, as you can leave it as long as you want, regardless of the length of your hair.

Another type of temporary dreadlocks are fake or removable dreadlocks, which also last about 3 months and can be made from natural or synthetic hair. If you prefer not to risk making dreadlocks with a needle and would still like to try them out or see how they look in your hair, the removable ones are the best option, as they are very similar to the natural ones.

You can find some very beautiful and well-crafted synthetic dreads models in some Etsy stores.

Needle dreads are the natural ones so to speak. They are fixed and modeled only with a crochet needle, tangling the strands of hair. It is the choice of those who intend to cultivate them for a long time, since the older they are, the more beautiful they are!

O minimum length of the hair to make the wool dreadlocks is 5 cm, while the needle dreadlocks are recommended from 15 cm, as they shorten the hair by about 3 to 5 cm.

Does it spoil the hair?

No. As long as you strictly follow all the necessary care and the length of stay with the dreads, your hair will not deteriorate. If you are very concerned about this, you can moisturize them before putting them on and after taking them off (I have a good recipe for this below!).

Oh! Don't be alarmed by the hair loss when you remove the wool, these strands are those that should have fallen out of your hair normally like every day, but got stuck inside the wool.

How long does it last?

As you've seen above, wool dreads last a maximum of 3 months. It's important that you don't go past that time so you don't damage your hair and you don't run the risk of forming (natural) dreads as you grow.

How much?

In the salon or at home the price is around R$5 to R$10 each and for the entire hair around R$100 to R$200. If you are going to do it at home, the only expense will be with the balls of yarn.

What precautions are needed?

When washing:

  • Wash as often as you feel the need (oily hair requires more washes than dry hair).
  • Use only shampoo, preferably anti-dandruff or anti-residue, and avoid creams and conditioners (dread accumulates much more residue than normal hair, so don't want to use products that accumulate too much in the hair).
  • For new dreadlocks, dilute the shampoo with water to make washing easier.
  • Lift the dreadlocks upwards when rinsing so that scalp dirt falls downwards and not into the dreadlocks.
  • Do not wash your hair in the afternoon, at night or before bed, as it will not dry and the wool will have a very strong smell, in addition to the possible proliferation of fungi and bacteria. Wash in the morning and, if you can, stay in the sun (if not, dry well with the dryer).

Daytime:

  • It is common to see dots and white balls on your scalp, which are inflamed bulbs of the hair shaft (as it is too tight, the hair ends up bursting a little at the root).
  • If after a while you remove the stitches and they don't stop appearing, it means that your hair is weak and bursting, because it can't bear the weight of the dreads.
  • Therefore, use a tonic or vegetable oil at the root indicated to strengthen and hydrate the hair (such as the Gota Dourada tonic). You can also use these products even if no gray spots appear, to further strengthen your hair. Remember to apply only at the root and avoid letting it run into the dreads.

Time to sleep:

  • Avoid sleeping with him loose and loose, always try to arrest him. Tying it high up might hurt a little, so it's okay to tie it lower.

What can I do to strengthen my hair?

If you are afraid of your hair thinning after dreadlocks, there are some very good treatments to prevent this from happening.

Before putting on and after taking off the dreads

A very good recipe for you to do before you put your wool dreads on and right after you take them off is the hot oil treatment. I highly recommend that you use coconut oil in this treatment, as it has excellent nourishing and moisturizing power (vitamin K, vitamin E and iron), in addition to other benefits, which is all your hair needs after dreadlocks!

Well, let's go:

  1. Wash your hair and make sure it's clean.
  2. Make a water bath with your coconut oil (30 ml) until it is warm and not hot, so you don't risk burning yourself with it. At this stage you can also add olive oil (15 ml) if your scalp is very dry or for dandruff. If you are oily, you can use jojoba oil (15 ml), which reduces oiliness and has a moisturizing, nourishing and restorative action. Your favorite essential oil is also welcome here, as nobody knows your hair better than you do!
  3. With your hair still wet (not soaking wet, just damp), massage the warm oil into your roots and work your way through your hair to the ends.
  4. Wrap your hair in a hot towel (heat it with a hairdryer or iron) or in a plastic cap, and let it rest for 20 minutes.
  5. Wash and style as usual.

You can repeat the process from month to month.

To do weekly after removing dreadlocks

If even with the hot oil treatment you still feel that your hair is in need of more care, you can also use the apple cider vinegar recipe. It's a great treatment that seals the cuticles, leaving your hair shinier, stronger and less prone to breakage, as well as removing product buildup that suffocates the scalp and aiding natural hair growth.

You just need to mix one part apple cider vinegar with two parts water and use it as a final rinse after washing your hair. To minimize the odor, add some of your favorite essential oil!

You can repeat the process once or twice a week.

How to Make Wool Dread:
Step by step!

Wool Dread: Doubts, Care and Models + DIY!

Yes, we come to the best part! How to make my woolen dreadlocks at home? Amazingly, it's not complicated at all, it just takes time and patience (some people take about 2 days to make the dreadlocks all over their heads). The only expense you will have will be with balls of yarn (about 10 balls cost less than R$30!). So if you prefer to save, there's no better way!

You can check the step-by-step in the video below, it's very well explained (I tested it on a lock of hair and it worked really well, trust me)!
